Hecate is often known as the Goddess of Witchcraft, or from the Greek Pantheon. However, she may have originated it what’s now Turkey, where they have found ancient statues & temples in her honor.. One of which was reconstructed in 2021. Though she is now mostly associated with darkness, death & all the spooky things, she was originally one version of the Great Mother Goddess. She was honored by midwives & mothers to aid in child birth, and also at the end of life to ease the transition of death. In the Greek Mythology she was connected to Demeter & Persephone, being the one who told Demeter that Persephone had gone to the underworld. She became Persephones companion, guiding her to and fro each year as she made her descent & ascent from the underworld. Hecate is known for her ability to travel between worlds, and is called on to help people do the same. She is a gatekeeper, and will assist you at different thresholds, be it birth, death or when coming to a crossroads where difficult decisions must be made. She often overlaps or is intertwined with Artemis, and together they blended into Diana Trivia in Roman Mythology. The word trivia, comes from the word “trivium” meaning a place where three roads meet. This is represented by the statues of Hecate and Diana Trivia, the Maiden, Mother & Crone, often depicted as the triple Goddess around a pillar, called the Hecateaon. It wasn’t until Christianity took over that all the helpful aspects of Hecate were removed, and she became only associated with Witches, Darkness & Death. May we honor Hecate and all her aspects as the Great Mother Goddess that was known to the ancient world.
