Organic Vitex agnus-castus, aka Chaste Berry, in Organic Grape Vodka.

Vitex has been treasured by humans for thousands of years for its ability to nourish the endocrine system and balance hormones. Vitex acts on the pituitary gland, initiating activation of the HPO (Hypothalamic- Pituitary -Ovarian axis, or the HPG (Hypothalamic- Pituitary- Gonadal axis.) In women it can regulate the balance between estrogen and progesterone, and increase the luteinizing hormone LH. This helps to ease symptoms of PMS, Menopause, and Amenorrhea (abnormal absence of menstruation.) When menstruation is irregular or absent, it may be caused by too little progesterone, which is responsible for removal of unfertilized eggs. An over abundance of prolactin may contribute to this by stopping ovulation all-together. Vitex has been shown to increase progesterone and decrease prolactin levels by binding to dopamine receptors, which may improve mood, regulate the menstrual cycle, ( or initiate it’s return,) relieve cramping and relieve painfully tender breasts associated with extreme PMS. It’s is sometimes used to increase fertility in women, due it’s effect on the luteinizing hormone.

In men Vitex had been used to lower testosterone levels, hence the name “Chaste Berry.” It’s also sometimes called Monks Pepper, as Monks would utilize this herb to calm their hormonal urges, helping them to remain chaste, and honor their vows of celibacy. In folklore there’s stories of wives sneaking Vitex into their husbands diets to keep them faithful. Some men work with this herb to balance the Chakras as well as the hormones, and to slow early hair loss, which is associated with too much testosterone.

Vitex agnus-castus, like many berries is high in anti-oxidant, anti-bacterial, and anti-inflammatory compounds, contributing to it’s many benefits for the glandular (endocrine) system. The pituitary gland ( the master of the endocrine system,) is responsible for production of many hormones which then regulate the other glands, including the thyroid, adrenals, and reproductive organs. Some studies have shown it to increase melatonin production as well, leading to more balanced circadian rhythyms.
